Wyoming's Wildfire Risk for Communities and Utilities
Coming Soon!

Wildfire ignitions can occur anywhere, but Athena's probabilistic projections primarily focus on wildfire outcomes. VOA is an advanced technology designed to comprehensively evaluate various land attributes that affect susceptibility to wildfires.

Each 10,000 square foot area (30 square meters) receives an assessment based on its unique characteristics, and the surrounding attributes for several miles, resulting in a Conditional Profile for that specific location.

Then, separate from location, Conditional Profiles are cross-referenced with historical wildfire data to calculate the likelihood of a given location being affected by a wildfire. This information provides a Probability Risk. The combination of Conditional Profiles and Probability Risk Scores is the most accurate tool for assessing wildfire risk because the Voice of the Acre® tells the story of the landscape.

Even in areas where wildfires have not occurred historically, current-year land characteristics could still pose a potential wildfire risk and VOA customers can focus their mitigation efforts in areas with the highest risk.

Ignitions can happen anywhere and from a variety of sources – Athena’s VOI is agnostic as to the source. But ignition events that start in Red (High Risk) Areas have resulted in larger wildfires compared to those in Green (Lower Risk) Areas. Looking ahead, it's expected that over 70% of areas affected by wildfires in the coming year will align with the areas categorized as a Red Area by Athena's VOA technology today. Similarly, Green Areas will account for less than 5% of the area inside the perimeter of all wildfires.

Athena provides comprehensive wildfire risk assessments for all locations, structures, and fixed assets in the states it has fingerprinted. This in-depth analysis serves as the foundation for evaluating property-specific risks.

This detailed information is then aggregated into census blocks, offering a cost-effective solution tailored for utilities and municipalities. Census blocks, being the smallest and consistently defined geographical units, are essential for facilitating artificial intelligence analysis. The use of census blocks allows machine learning, based on millions of data points.  Using pixels leads to potential computing slowdowns that arise when handling hundreds of millions of data points, as the AI seeks to identify meaningful patterns in the data.

Athena provides a probabilistic projection of wildfire risk, based on three approaches:
1) Conditions at the location and the surrounding area - described as a Conditional Profile
2) The historic performance of that profile, as a cohort, or group, when looking at historic fires - described as a Probability Score
3) The combination, for that particular location.
